What to do after your Islamic Studies course

I find many students complete their Dars-e-Nizami course, or their basic Islamic studies course and then park it, they don’t know where to take it next. I have found the teenagers will go on to completing some form of degree or diploma or a qualification to get them into a profession, the sisters will get married and now hone makers, and then others who study for the pursuit of amassing knowledge.

Here are some things you can get up to:

Further Study

Build upon the knowledge by enrolling on to advanced courses in the same science or repeat a science with a different teacher or study another equivalent text. One can study with another institute even or consider formal entry into a university for a masters or doctorate.

Interdisciplinary Studies

If you are interested in a particular field or industry, combine your islamic studies with fields like finance, medicine or psychology.

Teaching

Teaching also solidifies knowledge. Teach at your instutute, or set up your own or join another. But before this seek a course in pedagogy or some form of ‘how to teach’ course. A teacher needs to remember they are in a position of authority and trust, and due care must be taken in passing knowledge on.

Teachers must prepare structured lessons and educational materials.

Writing

Contribute to Islamic thought by writing articles, defending the faith, representing the faith, etc, or create educational resources.

Leadership and Community Roles

Become an Imam of a Masjid, whether locally or further away from home. Or become a secondary Imam/Sunday Imam. Some go on to occasionally deliver Friday sermons only.

Or support the full time Imam of the mosque with Q and A, and community guidance.

Become a Mufti

Continue your studies and complete the Ifta course which will allow you to issue fatwas.

Chaplaincy

Work in hospitals, prisons, or universities providing spiritual care to Muslims.

Dawah and Outreach

Join or start initiatives that promote understanding of Islam. Or particpate in public speaking, inspire others through Islamic talks and workshops. Study Adab beforehand.

Media and Content Creation

Use your knowledge to educate a broader audience with podcasts and Youtube shorts.

Counselling and Personal Development

Offer guidance rooted in Islamic principles for marital, youth, or personal challenges. Or empower individuals to achieve their goals while staying aligned with their faith. Preferably gain relevant qualifications beforehand.

Non-Profit Work

Initiate projects to uplift local or global Muslim communities or work with Islamic charities to assist those in need.

Translation

Translate classical Arabic, urdu, Farsi texts.

Shariah Advisory

Work with Islamic banks or businesses on financial matters.

Finally, Least of all, one should be teaching their own family members.
